Ultrasound is a safe and painless imaging modality that can be used to assess the internal organs and structures of the abdomen, pelvis, neck and scrotum.
Your examination will be performed by a Sonographer; a specially trained medical imaging professional. Gel will be applied to the skin overlying the body part being examined and then the sonographer will move the ultrasound probe over the skin surface to generate an image. The gel removes any air between your skin and the ultrasound probe and allows the sound waves to travel into your body. The sonographer may need to apply pressure, ask you to hold your breath or move into a certain position to help visualise the area of concern.
Once images have been obtained a Radiologist (specialist medical imaging doctor) will review the pictures and provide a written report for your doctor. The Radiologist may sometimes attend your examination to personally examine you or discuss your issue.
Please refer to specific examinations to obtain appropriate preparation for your examination.
