Dr Maddern graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and upon completion of specialist radiology training was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR).

Dr Maddern worked at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital until 1991. In 1992 he moved to the USA to complete a Scanlon Chest Radiology Fellowship. Upon his return to Adelaide, Dr Maddern joined Drs Miller and Moore, who merged with Jones Radiology in 1996.

Dr Maddern has been a reader at BreastScreen SA since 1994. In 2003, he was appointed Visiting Medical Specialist at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he continues to work part-time.

Dr Maddern’s areas of special interest are Breast Imaging and Musculoskeletal (MSK) Imaging. As well as maintaining his RANZCR membership, Dr Maddern is also a member of the Australasian Musculoskeletal Imaging Group (AMSIG).

In his spare time, Dr Maddern enjoys fly-fishing and travel.
