A/Prof Barras completed his medical degrees at Monash University (MBBS (Hons)), BMedSc (Hons)) in 1999.
He completed anatomy and surgery qualifications at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne and The University of Melbourne (DipSurgAnat, DipOMS). He was the Stroke Imaging Fellow at Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH), serving for four years on the first Acute Code Stroke team at the hospital (2006-09). Whilst a Radiology Registrar at RMH from 2010-14, he completed both Master of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy theses on Imaging Predictors in Stroke Evaluation at the University of Melbourne (MMed, PhD). In 2015, he became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR).
A/Prof Barras has broad experience in private radiology practice and teleradiology.
In 2015-16 he was a Diagnostic Neuroradiology Fellow at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, Charing Cross Hospital, Moorfields Eye Hospital and King’s College Hospital, London and became the second Australian to serve as a Consultant Neuroradiologist at Queen Square in 2017.
His research has been published in Stroke and The American Journal of Neuroradiology, has been presented at many national and international research meetings and was awarded the Toshiba Prize for best scientific presentation by the RANZCR in 2012.
A/Prof Barras is an experienced anatomy teacher and examiner since 2002, was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in Teaching nominated by his students at The University of Melbourne in 2011, and is currently co-authoring two international textbooks in Neuroimaging.
A/Prof Barras joins the staff of Dr Jones & Partners in 2018 with subspecialty expertise in all aspects of Adult Diagnostic Neuroradiology including advanced brain imaging techniques and spinal pain procedures, Head and Neck Imaging, Dental/Maxillofacial Imaging and Emergency/Trauma Radiology.
